  2. James McMurtry is adept at describing characters at the edge of transition and change, in different phases of life. In "See The Elephant," a character is looking ahead; in "Childish Things," he's looking back. At the end of "Childish Things," when he's in the present, he sings, "All I want now is just a comfortable chair.".

  3. Childish Things follows James McMurtry's well-received live album by a little over a year and maintains the high standards set by that release while occasionally upping the stakes. The raw yet full roots rock-sound remains dominated by McMurtry's tough, no-frills guitar chords and longtime backing musicians, drummer Daren Hess and bassist Author: James Mcmurtry.

  5. Sep 06,  · CHILDISH THINGS is a great album, 12 songs written by James McMurtry that present a view of the world from the perspective of the Red States working class. There is not a weak link in this chain, but the masterpiece is "We Can't Make It Here," a 7-minute blistering manifesto against capitalist greed, exploitation, racism and imperialist war/5(91).

Sure, he can rock n’ roll when the mood strikes and he’s never been shy about airing his political grievances– but when it comes to telling stories, his ability to bring characters to life within the confines of a song is unmatched.
