  2. Nice addition! Kerouac's ON THE ROAD got me back into hiking and backpacking and peak bagging after a long layoff. THE DHARMA BUMS remains one of my favorite Keroauc novels. Next year I'll be scrambling around in Grand Tetons/Yellowstone. But in I'm headed to the Sierras where I've promised myself a climb/hike to the summit of Matterhorn Peak%(10).

  3. As he pounded away, sometimes for 18 hours a day, Kerouac consulted and copied from the handwritten notebooks, stacks of letters, and translations of sacred texts piled around his desk. Despite its haste of composition, The Dharma Bums has a coherent narrative structure, an easy-to-comprehend style and an explicit set of themes.

  5. Jul 26,  · I thought Dharma Bums was Kerouac's best. I loved it so much I even emulated some of his experiences, like working in a lookout tower for the Forest service, hoping a freight train, and hitch hiking cross country many times. Right on man.

  8. A witty, moving philosophical novel, Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums is a journey of self-discovery through the lens of Zen Buddhist thought. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Ann Douglas. Following the explosive energy of On the Road, the book that put the Beat Genration on the literary map - and Jack Kerouac on the 5/5(1).
